Frédéric Borne Sogno

General Manager for Spain at Trinity College London

Frédéric is a Frenchman who lives in Spain. He has devoted 12 of his 32 years of professional career to Management Consulting and the remaining 20 to General Management in the Language Education industry, with executive roles in language school chains, language examination centers and examination boards.

He served as the CEO of several companies from 1992 to 2000, before becoming the CEO of a chain of language schools in Spain, employing around 200 full-time native English teachers, examiners, academic directors, teacher trainers and textbook authors, out of a total of more than 350 employees, making it the largest in Spain and incidentally the largest employer of British nationals in Spain (confirmed by the British ambassador). 

Among other activities, from 2000 he helped launch Net Languages, the first virtual language school, in 2001 he supervised the calibration of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR, the standard level system of the Council of Europe) in Spain, he opened a language examination center for several certification bodies – Pearson, IELTS, Instituto Cervantes and Cambridge English Language Assessment – assessing and certifying up to 30,000 Spanish students per year. 

Frédéric is also a Quality Inspector for the International House World Organisation, the largest network of independent language schools in the world. He also founded and chaired the Spanish Association of Examination Centers.

Frédéric joined PeopleCert, the world leader in the certification of talents, three years ago, as Head for Western Europe. He successfully introduced the LanguageCert suite of official English exams in Spain, Portugal and France, winning several large government tenders and developing nationwide networks of test centres.

Frédéric recently joined Trinity College London as a member of the executive team. Trinity College London is a leading examinations board and independent education charity that has been providing assessments around the world since 1877. It specialises in the assessment of communicative and performance skills covering Music, Drama, combined arts and English language. Trinity believes that effective communicative and performance skills are life enhancing, know no bounds and should be within reach of us all. Trinity delivers close to a million assessments each year worldwide.

English is Frédéric’s third language. He tries to cultivate as many languages as possible. He holds a Master in Management from EDHEC Business School (France).

Panel Description: Learn from key decision makers when it comes to language learning products: an executive member of a leading examinations board and independent education charity, an edtech leader who oversees a state-of-the-art language assessment tool utilizing machine learning, a university professor who helps his students choose the best products, and an end-user herself. What principles do they follow to choose the best products in their individual roles and how can you learn from their experiences to choose the best products to 1) build your own product, 2) help others in your team or classroom use the best products, and 3) choose the best language learning products for yourself.
